The reigning World Champion Chicago Cubs have always had fun under manager Joe Maddon but earlier this week before a road trip to Southern California they took it to a whole new level. After defeating the San Francisco Giants Maddon decided to have his guys dress up as the characters from Will Ferrell’s Anchorman. Anchorman of course is a movie about a newscaster in the 1970’s in San Diego.
While speaking to MLB.com Maddon said:
"It's the Ron Burgundy slash Brick Tamland -- and I also wanted to include Tommy La Stella tribute -- road trip, where 60 percent of the time works every time, sponsored by 'Sex Panther' cologne trip,"
In preparing for the game Maddon offered up several ideas to the team but they were all pretty excited about the Anchorman theme. Most of the players seemed quite committed to the bit. Kyle Schwarber dressed as Champ. Several other players dressed in 70s style apparel as well.
The theme for the road trip was such a hit that Will Ferrell himself got in on the fun by creating a response video for the Cubs just before their Friday night game with the Dodgers.
This is not the first time the Cubs have had fun with their dress attire on road trips. In fact, manager Joe Maddon has a well-established history of having interesting dress codes for his teams. There of course was the onesie pajamas theme after Jake Arrieta’s no hitter, as well as the minimalist zany theme.
The reigning World Champs know how to have a good time so we made an officially licensed by the MLBPA shirt to get in on the fun. Just look how the team decided to head into their latest road trip, with an Anchorman theme! The team had style and swagger that would make Ron Burgundy and the rest of the Channel 4 news team proud.
