Gardner Minshew. Peter King. Football fans. Beer. T-Shirts.
These were the pillars of BreakingT's inaugural Super Bowl event. On Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, in Miami's Wynwood arts district, BreakingT hosted more than 70 people at Concrete Beach Brewery for a casual, two-hour gathering.
The headliners were King and Minshew. The legendary NFL writer and the Jaguars popular rookie quarterback made for a fun pairing. King conducted a 40-minute Q&A with Minshew in front of an engaged audience. Topics covered included Minshew's recent RV tour across America and his rise from Mississippi junior college to the NFL.
Jacksonville Times-Union columnist Gene Frenette was among the attendees and wrote about the event the next day. Brent Martineau, sports director at Jacksonville's CBS/FOX affiliate and host at ESPN 690AM, also attended and produced segments on Minshew.
Other notables in attendance included: Sports Illustrated personality Charlotte Wilder; The Ringer writer Rodger Sherman and producer Jason Gallagher; ESPN editor Rachel Ullrich; SI editors Ryan Hunt and Stephen Canella; NBC Sports Bay Area vice president Justin Hathaway; sports agent Darren Heitner; USA Today digital director Matt Ryan; NFL photography director Ben Liebenberg.
Custom T-shirts and koozies were created for the event and given out to attendees. BreakingT was represented by CEO Alex Welsh, president Jamie Mottram, sales director Bill Schiazza and marketing director Dom Bonvissuto.
