Legendary Washington Bullets coach Dick Motta led the Bullets to an NBA championship in 1978. During that incredible title run one memorable phrase entered our collective sports lexicon: “the opera isn’t over until the fat lady sings”.
During a playoff game that year between the Bullets and the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs took game one of that series and shortly afterward a San Antonio broadcaster uttered the now famous line in order to illustrate that even though the Spurs won game one, the series was far from over as was the Bullets season.
The Bullets would win the next 3 games against the Spurs needing only one more win to advance to the next round. Coach Motta headed the lesson of that San Antonio broadcaster and repeated the phrase, properly giving credit where it was due, of course. Though the phrase had not really caught on at the point.
The Bullets of course would advance and eventually play Philadelphia and in due time would again take a 3-1 series lead. Once again Coach Motta repeated the phrase: “the opera isn’t over until the fat lady sings”. The second time around the phrase took off and the Bullets became Champions of the World.
The team hit a bit of a drought soon after and eventually the Bullets became the Wizards and the organization struggled. That has now changed this season as John Wall and the Wizards have won their division for the first time since 1979! We here at Breaking T thought now was the perfect time to bring back the phrase back with our latest tshirt and give the Wizards a little bit of that 1978 magic to their 2017 playoff run.
